The use of covert Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment is a court accepted and proven law enforcement investigative tool. This comprehensive three day course will cover all of the essential topics that the officer and agency needs to successfully implement covert GPS equipment into narcotics investigations and many other types of investigations. Core topics include: Understanding what GPS is and how it is used in law enforcement, Traditional law enforcement GPS equipment, Managing equipment powering, Software setup and tracking, Next Generation GPS, Legal issues and case reviews, Purchasing the appropriate equipment and grants, Overview of other tracking technologies and much more.
This course will balance classroom training with several realistic practicals. Officers will prepare and plan for GPS deployment, conduct several installs of equipment, covertly deploy and track target vehicles, manage power issues, covertly recover equipment and download evidence obtained. Officers are advised that they will be working in and under vehicles during this course and should dress appropriately. Officers are also encouraged to bring all of their agencies GPS equipment and related items if they wish to train on the equipment. Vehicles brought to the training should be able to support covert surveillance operations.
