Criminal Patrol Tactics for the Rural Officer was designed for law enforcement officers who are commonly patrolling sparsely populated or rural areas. This course has been designed to address the issues, in a systematic order, in which they are commonly encountered by the officer during a traffic stop or criminal interdiction encounter. The training is designed to emphasize the officer's skills in detecting and apprehending those in violation of the various drug laws while utilizing the few resources available to the officer. This course will provide non-traditional alternatives to common problems such as lack of back-up and equipment.
This 20-hour training program starts with the identification of common law enforcement mindset errors and the changes to the officer's thought process to increase the officer's ability to be successful. The basic legal aspects concerning the laws of arrest, search and seizure, the primary types of legally recognized searches, and common defense challenges along with common legal definitions will be addressed. Traffic stop and observational techniques of criminal activity will be discussed. An in-depth session on roadside interviews emphasizing listening skills, answer analysis, kinesics, questioning techniques and rapport building will be taught. An overview of clandestine and rolling drug laboratory identification will be discussed. Drug impairment signs on the human body and the drug category classification will be discussed to assist the officer in recognizing drug related impairment in people. Drug and paraphernalia identification skills will be addressed. An in-depth vehicle searches segment addressing the common concealment methods and the detection practices to utilize along with the free or inexpensive searching equipment that can be obtained will be discussed. Case preparation and testimony skills will also be addressed during this compact, intensive course.
